Reflection · 5 minutes
What has survival cost you?
Surviving keeps you upright. It also quietly costs you in places you may not have stopped to name.
For each area, answer how much it currently feels strained, distant or hard to access. There are no winners or losers here, just a clearer map.

My closest relationships feel further away than I'd like.

What this reflection looks at
Explore where survival strategies may have shown up across the different areas of your life, and where you'd like life to feel more like yours. There are 11 statements, and it takes most men about 5 minutes. Nothing is scored against anyone else, and nothing here is a diagnosis. It's a way of putting language to patterns you've probably been carrying without naming.
- Relationships
When it's light: Your people feel close. Don't take that for granted.
When it's heavy: Survival shows up here as distance. Closeness is harder when part of you is still on guard.
- Trust
When it's light: Trust comes more easily than it used to.
When it's heavy: Trust gets withdrawn before it gets betrayed. You learned that for a reason.
- Self-worth
When it's light: There's some ground under you.
When it's heavy: When self-worth is low, every other area has to work harder to compensate.
- Confidence
When it's light: You can act without an audit running.
When it's heavy: Confidence isn't loudness. It's the quiet sense that you're allowed to take up the space you're already in.
- Emotional wellbeing
When it's light: You can ride your moods rather than be ridden by them.
When it's heavy: When you've spent years managing feelings, the system that names them goes quiet. It can come back.
- Health & body
When it's light: Your body has somewhere to go and rest.
When it's heavy: The body keeps the score. Sleep, tension and energy are honest reporters.
- Purpose
When it's light: You have a sense of why.
When it's heavy: Survival is necessarily short-term. Purpose is what comes back when survival eases.
- Identity
When it's light: You know what's yours and what isn't.
When it's heavy: If you've been useful to everyone for a long time, who you are can get a little buried.
- Connection
When it's light: You can let people in.
When it's heavy: Loneliness isn't always about people in the room. It's about being unmet inside them.
Questions worth sitting with
You'll be offered these again at the end, alongside your results. Some men find it useful to read them first, slowly, before answering anything.
- Looking at your wheel, which area do you protect most, and which one quietly suffers for it?
- If one area shifted by ten percent in the next three months, which one would you choose?
- Who in your life would notice that shift first?
How to use what comes back
Your results are a snapshot of one honest hour, not a verdict on who you are. Patterns shift as your life shifts.
This is a self-reflection tool, not a clinical assessment, and it doesn't replace medical, psychological or legal support. If what surfaces feels heavier than you expected, that's not a failure of the reflection. It's usually the most useful thing it could have done. Take it to someone: a coach, a therapist, your GP, or a man you trust. If you're in crisis in the UK, Samaritans are on 116 123, free, any hour of the night.
