Reflection · 4 minutes
Are you living in survival mode?
A quiet way to notice whether you're moving through your life from protection and coping, rather than from choice and connection.
Answer honestly, the way you'd answer a friend who already knew. There's no right score. This is a mirror, not a measurement.
Reflect honestly
I notice I'm scanning rooms, people or situations for what might go wrong.

What this reflection looks at
Help you see whether your nervous system is still running on patterns that kept you safe once, and what they're costing you now. There are 11 statements, and it takes most men about 4 minutes. Nothing is scored against anyone else, and nothing here is a diagnosis. It's a way of putting language to patterns you've probably been carrying without naming.
- Hypervigilance
When it's light: Your nervous system can settle without much effort. That's a quiet kind of safety.
When it's heavy: Part of you is still scanning for the next thing. That isn't paranoia. It's a body that learned, somewhere, that being on guard was wise.
- Emotional numbness
When it's light: Feelings come and go and you can be with them. That's worth noticing.
When it's heavy: Numbness is often the cost of having had too much to feel, for too long. It's not absence. It's protection.
- Overthinking
When it's light: Your mind doesn't trap you in loops too often.
When it's heavy: Overthinking is often what a clever mind does when the body doesn't feel safe to rest.
- People pleasing
When it's light: Your yeses feel like yours, mostly.
When it's heavy: Tracking other people closely was probably useful once. It tends to leave you exhausted and a little far from yourself now.
- Perfectionism
When it's light: You can let things be good enough.
When it's heavy: Perfectionism is rarely about standards. More often it's a quiet bargain. Be flawless and you won't be rejected.
- Avoidance
When it's light: You can face the hard things, even slowly.
When it's heavy: Avoidance isn't weakness. It's a nervous system saying: not yet, not without help.
- Difficulty resting
When it's light: You can be still without it feeling threatening.
When it's heavy: If rest feels uncomfortable, that's a body that has been useful for a long time and forgot it was allowed to stop.
- Constant responsibility
When it's light: You let others carry their share.
When it's heavy: Carrying everything is often what children of unstable homes learn to do. It keeps people alive and quietly exhausts them.
Questions worth sitting with
You'll be offered these again at the end, alongside your results. Some men find it useful to read them first, slowly, before answering anything.
- When did this pattern first feel useful. What was it protecting you from?
- What would change in one relationship if you trusted yourself five percent more?
- If you spoke to yourself the way you'd speak to a friend in this position, what would you actually say?
How to use what comes back
Your results are a snapshot of one honest hour, not a verdict on who you are. Patterns shift as your life shifts.
This is a self-reflection tool, not a clinical assessment, and it doesn't replace medical, psychological or legal support. If what surfaces feels heavier than you expected, that's not a failure of the reflection. It's usually the most useful thing it could have done. Take it to someone: a coach, a therapist, your GP, or a man you trust. If you're in crisis in the UK, Samaritans are on 116 123, free, any hour of the night.
