Reflection · 5 minutes
How might past experiences still be affecting you?
Trauma isn't only what happened. It's what your nervous system learned in order to survive it.
If anything here lands harder than expected, pause. There's no rush. The 2am Grounding Card linked below is a soft place to land.
Reflect honestly
Even in safe situations, my body doesn't always know it's safe.

What this reflection looks at
Help you notice where old experiences may still be shaping the present, without dragging you back through them. There are 8 statements, and it takes most men about 5 minutes. Nothing is scored against anyone else, and nothing here is a diagnosis. It's a way of putting language to patterns you've probably been carrying without naming.
- Safety in the body
When it's light: Your body can settle.
When it's heavy: When the body never quite stands down, even rest feels like a job.
- Trust
When it's light: Trust comes when it's been earned.
When it's heavy: Trust gets withdrawn early because being wrong about it cost too much, somewhere back there.
- Self-worth
When it's light: There's ground under you.
When it's heavy: Shame is often the leftover residue of what wasn't your fault.
- Relationships
When it's light: You can be in good ones and stay.
When it's heavy: Patterns are the nervous system's best guess at what's familiar. Familiar isn't the same as safe.
- Emotional regulation
When it's light: You can ride your moods.
When it's heavy: Regulation isn't suppression. It's the body's ability to come back to baseline after a wave.
- Hypervigilance
When it's light: You can be in a room without scanning it.
When it's heavy: Hypervigilance was a brilliant childhood strategy. It tends to exhaust adults.
- Connection
When it's light: You can let people in.
When it's heavy: Disconnection is one of trauma's quieter costs. It looks like coping from the outside.
- Identity
When it's light: You know what's yours.
When it's heavy: When survival takes up the whole stage, the self that was forming gets quiet.
Questions worth sitting with
You'll be offered these again at the end, alongside your results. Some men find it useful to read them first, slowly, before answering anything.
- Which of these patterns has been with you longest?
- What was that pattern protecting you from when it first arrived?
- What's one small kindness you could offer the younger version of you who started it?
How to use what comes back
If anything here unsettled you, that's information, not failure. A free 30-minute discovery call is a soft next step. It's not a commitment, it's a conversation.
This is a self-reflection tool, not a clinical assessment, and it doesn't replace medical, psychological or legal support. If what surfaces feels heavier than you expected, that's not a failure of the reflection. It's usually the most useful thing it could have done. Take it to someone: a coach, a therapist, your GP, or a man you trust. If you're in crisis in the UK, Samaritans are on 116 123, free, any hour of the night.
